Signs Your Child May Have a Vision Problem — and When to Book a Pediatric Eye Exam

Many kids don't know their vision is blurry — they've never known any different. An Ottawa optometrist shares the signs your child may have a vision problem and when to book a pediatric eye exam.

Kids will tell you they see just fine. But what if they don't?

Many children have no idea their vision is blurry, because they've never known anything different. They assume everyone sees the world the way they do. That's exactly why so many vision problems go unnoticed until a child starts to struggle at school or in sports.

How do I know if my child has a vision problem?

The clearest signs show up in your child's behaviour, not their words.

At home, these are the things to look out for:

  • Rubbing their eyes often, even when they're not tired
  • Squinting to see the board, the TV, or a book
  • An eye turn — one eye drifting in, out, up, or down
  • A head turn or tilt to line up their eyes
  • Losing their place when reading, or using a finger to keep track
  • Sitting too close to the screen, or holding books and devices very close
  • Frequent headaches or tired eyes, especially after schoolwork
  • Avoiding reading or near work, or a short attention span for it

One or two of these on an off day isn't cause for alarm — but if you're noticing them regularly, it's worth having your child's eyes checked because it may mean your child’s eyes aren’t working as well as they should.

Why kids don't tell you they can't see

Children rarely complain about their vision, for one simple reason: they don't know it's supposed to be different.

A child who has always seen a blurry chalkboard assumes everyone does. Because their brain adapts, they may not realize anything is wrong. That’s why relying on your child to speak up isn't enough, and why a proper eye exam matters even when your child says they're fine.

What happens at a children's eye exam?

A pediatric eye exam is much more than reading letters off a chart. Our optometrists check how well your child sees at every distance, how their eyes focus and work together, whether the eyes are properly aligned, and the overall health of the eye. Many of the tests are designed for children who can't yet read, so even young kids can have a thorough exam. We keep everything relaxed, friendly, and age-appropriate by explaining what we find in plain language.

When should my child have an eye exam?

The Canadian Association of Optometrists recommends a first eye exam at 6 to 9 months, at least one more between 2 and 5 years, and then once a year throughout the school years. Vision changes quickly as children grow, and problems are easiest to treat when they're caught early.

Good news for Ottawa families: OHIP provides coverage for a comprehensive eye exam every year for children and youth 19 and under. For more on exam frequency at every age, see our age-by-age guide to eye exams.

At Vision Care Ottawa, we also offer retina imaging & measure the length of your child’s eyes to get a sense of how to optimize their visual development & minimize their glasses prescription where possible.

Why back-to-school is the perfect time

So much of learning happens through vision: reading, the board, screens, sports. A child who can't see clearly can fall behind without anyone realizing why. Booking an eye exam makes sure your child's eyes are ready for a great year ahead: seeing clearly, healthy, and properly aligned.
